Ayurvedic lunch for an already hot girl!

Yesterday I tried eating a more ayurvedic lunch - soo in place of my usual cold salad I had warm stuffed red peppers. I am such a hot person that, especially during summer months, I reach for cold beverages and foods. Perhaps this tendency is why I struggle with energy during the hotter months. Obviously a one day experiment isn't conclusive enough, but after I had a warm lunch, I was burning up! I would love to hear everyone's thoughts & tips on this, especially if this is something you have experimented with, or struggled with, or studied. Thanks! Amber

  1. Well, what was in the peppers? You might still be in the Pitta season, and need to release the remains of summer heat. So maybe some pitta cooling foods like cucumbers, a little ice cream, and then wait until it turns colder to try the warm foods.
    What does JaiMa think?

  2. I know I still have some recipes that JaiMa gave out in our last mini retreat that might be great for you to try. Maybe JaiMa can email them to you or I can share them later. For me always being cold I try to eat warmer foods to keep me warmer, but in the summer's when I have been outside for sporting events or with my runs I do tend to lean towards fruit to cool me down internally or sometimes in foods that have a lot of bright colors.

  3. I am very late on this post but here's my take. In Ayurveda, foods can be categorized by tastes and effects. Each taste has an energetic quality. Sometimes we have to learn to think outside of the box when it comes to Ayurvedic cooking. For example, when we think about sweet food, we might think of sugar. However, the sweet taste can be attributed to herbs, grains and even some vegetables. I would be good to find an Ayurvedic food list that explains the qualities of different foods. I’m sure there is one in one of my books. I will try to check on it before the next Friday we meet.

Since you are pitta-vata, you may have to play around with your food choices a little until you find what works for you. From what you have told me, you tend to run hot most of the time but you also struggle with the scattered/ungrounded qualities of vata. If you are feeling hot but also ungrounded, you might try something sweet and cooling….like coconut. Foods with a sweet quality are grounding. On cooler days, you may want to choose warm salads or cooked foods that have cooling properties. Cooking the food will help with digestion and calming vata while cooling foods help keep your pitta in balance.
